1st Grade has been learning all about the human body! We were very fortunate to have the wonderful Nurse Jacy come in and have a discussion with the class. She covered everything from how to become a nurse, what are some of her jobs she does, what is her favorite part of nursing, and she gave so many extra facts about our body! Nurse Jacy even let each student listen through her stethoscope. They listened to their heart, lungs, and stomach!

1st grade got to show off their smarts on the human body as well! Harper took Nurse Jacy through the different systems and organs in the human body display they have been working hard on! A HUGE thank you to Nurse Jacy for taking time out of her day to visit with the students!

Some questions to ask your student:
Where are all of the different spots you can check for your pulse?
What are some of the jobs a nurse does in a day?
How can you live a healthy life?

Mrs. Stober’s third grade class divided into small groups to show off their knowledge of the 5 vertebrate animal classes in poster form. Each group had to create a title, make a list of characteristics, and draw examples of animals that fit into their classification. These Dragons showed teamwork and cooperation to finish their poster on time!

Some questions to ask a third grader are:
-What are the five classes of vertebrate animals?
-What does vertebrate mean?
-Which class of vertebrate is your favorite and why?

Over the last week, Kindergarten has been learning all about the 5 Senses and how we use them every day.
Today we had a 5 Senses Discovery Day. We spent the afternoon using each of our 5 senses and deciding which things are our favorites.
They used their sense of touch to decide if they like the feeling of beads, pom poms, or pipe cleaners more.
They used their sense of smell to decide if they liked a fruity candle, minty candle, or hand sanitizer more.
They used their sense of hearing to decide if they like the sound of birds chirping, raindrops, or a metal slinky more.
They used their sense of taste to decide if they liked Oreos, Grahm Crackers, or Gummy Life Savers more.
And finally, they used their sense of sight to look through a magnifying glass at different little creatures and draw a detailed picture of what they saw.

Over the course of the week as we learned about each sense, we also talked about what happens if we lose one of them and how we learn to live everyday life. We learned about Ray Charles and Helen Keller. They were able to feel Braille on a sign in the school and were challenged with finding a pencil on their desk with their eyes closed. They were shocked when it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be and impressed that there are people who can do everything without the ability to see.

What a fantastic unit in our Reading curriculum!

Ask your student:
What do we have under our skin that helps us feel? (Nerves)
What do each of our 5 Senses communicate with? (Our Brain)
What is the colored part of our eye called? (Iris)

Second Grade is learning about ancient Chinese civilizations. Last Friday they learned about the Chinese writing system. They learned how the Chinese would use Block Pattern Printing to produce books. To replicate the system, they used stamps to write their own stories. The excitement quickly faded as they realized how much work it was!

Some questions to ask your child:
Who invented paper?
What did the Chinese use to write on before paper?
Why is writing such an important component to a civilization?

The seventh graders have been busy so far this trimester. We are just over the hump of our STEM unit with a trip to Mars. We’ve learned about what it takes to be an astronaut, with the students flexing their teamwork and problem-solving muscles. We’ve also learned some facts about Mars and how it differs from Earth. We have gotten to do four hands-on projects on our six “missions” – making straw rockets, constructing Mars landers, experimenting with Coke and Mentos, and testing catapults.

Ask your students:
What are the forces of flight that helped and hindered their straw rocket tests?
How did air resistance and shock absorption work with their Mars landers?
