January was a busy month for the Computer Science classes. The 8th graders started the quarter building spaghetti bridges to flex their teamwork muscles. All they had to work with was a box of dried spaghetti and hot glue. Their goal was to see whose bridge could hold the most textbooks. Team 1’s bridge held 12 textbooks (56.4 pounds) and Team 2’s bridge held 6 textbooks (27 pounds). Team 3’s bridge held 22 textbooks for a whopping 75.7 pounds before crashing to the floor. Congratulations, Team 3!
The freshman class got to create keychains with their first names using binary code. If you see one of the freshmen, ask them about binary code and have them describe their keychain for you.

Tonight's JHBBB games won't be shown on NFHS due to technical difficulties. We apologize for the inconvenience.

A Friday morning favorite at the elementary school is “Reading Buddies”. Here the second grade students read with their sixth grade friends.

The kindergarten class found some open water and went fishing for clusters! In our reading skills sections, students are learning about reading clusters (blends like st, bl, cr). Each fish had a word that started with different clusters, some of the fish were new and past vocabulary words like crop, stem, and grim. Students took turns catching fish and reading their words. As you can see, each catch was very exciting!
Some questions to ask your student:
Can you read the following words?
stop, clap, skip, drum
What are the clusters in each word?
crab, spot, blob, past

Attention CMC basketball fans! Washburn Public School will be hosting a free will fundraiser Thursday evening during the Central McLean/Washburn double headers to support one of their colleagues who lost her husband unexpectedly over Christmas break.

Friday, January 3rd was a great start to the new semester, thanks to the McClusky-Goodrich PTO. The high school students gathered together as a school to watch a movie while they enjoyed pizza and snacks (provided by the PTO).
The elementary students went to the Wing Theater to watch the Wild Robot. It was a special afternoon of togetherness and fun. Our PTO made the day even more special by sponsoring a treat box fully furnished with popcorn, a candy and drink. A huge thank you to our dedicated PTO members for making this possible by sponsoring the movie admission and treat boxes for all of our kids! A thank you to Mrs. Swenson for arranging the showing and our bus drivers for transporting everyone. #McClusky-GoodrichGoodrichPublicSchoolPTO

The Kindergarten students have added a new component to their calendar time. They fill out daily calendar binders that include writing the month, days of the week, weather, days in school, etc. When students answer questions, they get to shoot the basketball for 1 point, 2 points, or 3 points! They help keep score by using tally marks and are practicing counting by 5's. As a class, we scored 12 points on our first day!
Some questions to ask your student:
How would you make 12 using tally marks?
Ask them to count by 5's to 100.

Today in First Grade we talked about the work of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.
While we didn't look closely at his work, we discussed how hard it would be to paint on a ceiling.
To get an idea of the difficult task, the students were challenged to draw and color a picture on a piece of paper taped to the bottom of their desk!
Ask your student:
How long did it take Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel?
Was it easier or harder to "draw on the ceiling" than you thought it would be?

We're thrilled to announce the new app for MGPS! It's everything MGPS, in your pocket.

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than with fun Christmassy glasses!!
First Grade is having a full day of Christmas themed learning and crafts to celebrate the "Christmas Explosion" dress up day!
Merry Christmas everyone!

This morning, Kindergarten-1st grade and 4th-6th grades enjoyed some time drinking hot chocolate and learning about the ballet. They also watched a live performance of "The Nutcracker" by the Northern Plains Dance group out of Bismarck.
Ask your students:
How were the dancers able to tell a story without using any words?

It's the annual Pie-a-Freshman fundraiser! Thank you to the students and staff who donated for a chance to pie these brave students!

A couple of second graders built their version of the Great Wall of China on Tuesday morning before school started. Ask a second grader why the people of China built their Great Wall thousands of years ago.

Let's dress up to celebrate the last week before Christmas break! Next week (December 16-20), let's show our Christmas spirit with Candy Cane Day, Grinch vs. Santa Claus, Christmas Explosion/Ugly Sweater Day, PJ Day, and Favorite Christmas Movie Character Day. Ho ho ho, one week to go!
